The clamping head is intended for a material testing machine for clamping test specimens to be loaded in tension and/or compression. It consists of a basic body adapted for attaching to a material testing machine. Two clamping elements are guided on the basic body coaxially to one another and so as to be adjustable towards one another essentially perpendicularly to the direction of tension or compression. The clamping elements, clamping the test specimen between them, have clamping jaws (7) arranged at the end face and facing one another. The clamping jaws (7) are each mounted in such a way that they can be rotated about the axis (8) of the clamping element and locked in place. Furthermore, the clamping jaw (7) has at least one diametrically extending V-shaped groove (9) on its clamping side. Each of the two clamping jaws (7) has one or more half-shell-shaped holding recesses (11, 12) open towards the periphery. When the clamping jaws (7) are bearing against one another, the holding recesses (11, 12) together each form a test-specimen holder which has a reduced cross-sectional area in its peripheral end region. <IMAGE>
