PURPOSE:To make a usual KANA (Japanese syllabary)/KANJI (Chinese character) conversion free from restriction even when other arrangement constitution is obtained in which a converting dictionary can be used in common with the dictionary having no reference to KANA, KANJI and can be efficiently converted by eliminating the limitation of the arrangement constitution with the KANA and KANJI of the converting dictionary in the sequence of the Japanese syllabary. CONSTITUTION:The device is equipped with a converting dictionary memory means 101, a memory position information memory means 02 to store the information to show the memory position of the converting dictionary memory means 01 corresponding to the KANA of a converting object, a means 03 to read the memory position information and a means 04 to retrieve KANJI and an idiom from the converting dictionary memory means 01. The reading means 03 reads the memory position information corresponding to the KANA of the converting object from the memory position information memory means 02. The retrieving means 04 retrieves KANJI and the IDIOM corresponding to the KANA of the converting object from the converting dictionary memory means 01 designated by the read memory position information.
