PURPOSE:To instantaneously stop carrying of a microfilm, and to position correctly an image frame at a prescribed position by executing high speed carrying at the time of retrieval, switching it to low speed carrying in the vicinity of an object image frame, and thereafter, detecting this image frame. CONSTITUTION:In case of carrying a microfilm at a high speed, it is carried by using high carrying DC motors MH1 and MH2 for driving a cartridge 41 and an auto reel 42, and in case of carrying said film at a low speed, a nip roller 3 for inserting and holding this microfilm 1 and carrying it is attached axially to a low speed carrying DC motor ML by an electromagnetic clutch, and a rewinding side is brought to dynamic braking by applying a prescribed voltage to a winding side of the high speed carrying DC motors MH1, MH2. In this way, the microfilm 1 is carried at a low speed by preventing its winding looseness, and also, in accordance with a stop signal of a control part, the low speed carrying DC motor ML is also stopped and dynamic braking is applied. In this way, carrying of the microfilm is stopped instantaneously and can be positioned correctly at a prescribed position.
