PURPOSE:To reproce a picture without deteriorating the gradation and resolution even if a picture signal is used for an original including any kind of line drawing picture or the like by selecting either N-set of binary outputs or OR binary outputs as a binary picture signal based on the discrimination by a picture tone discrimination means. CONSTITUTION:An instruction is given, whether an input original has a line drawing picture such as a character, or a halftone picture such as a photograph or their mixed picture, and said instruction is outputted to a central processing unit 9 as a picture kind signal 11a. The central processing unit 9 outputs signals X, Y according to the picture kind signal 11 and the signals X, Y are inputted respectively to gates 13, 10. In case a SELECT signal is at logical '1', the selector 8 outputs selectively a binary signals 7a being an output of an OR gate 7 and while the SELECT signal is logical '0', a binary signal 6a is outputted and the output of the selector 8 is inputted to an output device 11, where a picture if formed. Then any kind of picture signal such as a line drawing picture is reproduced without deteriorating the gradation and resolution.
