The molecular weight of linear or cyclic organo(poly)siloxanes is modified continuously by means of a catalyst which is solid at least at the corresponding reaction temperature in the reaction mixture, delivering, continuously and simultaneously, the catalyst, which is solid at at least the corresponding reaction temperature in the reaction mixture, and the organo(poly)siloxane whose molecular weight is to be altered through a heated cylindrical reactor the contents of which are moved mechanically, this reactor having a length to internal diameter ratio of 1:1 to 20:1 and maintaining a pressure of 50 to 500 hPa (abs.) within it, and the mixture so obtained being released from the catalyst after leaving the reactor.
