PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an antitumor agent simply, in high yield and inexpensively, by reducing a specific 3'-O-thiobenzoyl-2'- deoxy-beta-uridine through desulfurization. CONSTITUTION:A compound shown by formula I (R is H, trityl, lower acyl or monohalogen-substituted benzoyl; X is halogen or trifluoromethyl) is reduced through desulfurization by the use of preferably 5-20 times as much Raney nickel as a reducing agent as the compound to be reduced by weight preferably at 30 deg.C- room temperature for <=10hr and optionally deprotected or optionally deprotected and then reduced through desulfurization to give the aimed compound shown by formula II. The compound shown by formula I can be obtained by condensing a compound shown by formula IV prepared according to the reaction formula (Y is lower alkyl) with a compound shown by formula VII.
