PURPOSE:To allow steel to show superior rust preventiveness without specially treating the surface of the steel by using a rust preventive composition obtd. by adding a salt of a specified copolymer to a rust preventive pigment so as to enhance the affinity of the pigment for steel. CONSTITUTION:A copolymer of one or more kinds of monomers selected among isobutylene, styrene and acrylic ester with maleic acid or maleic anhydride is neutralized with an alkali. The resulting salt of the copolymer is added to a rust preventive pigment such as red lead and they are kneaded to obtain a rust preventive composition. When a film of the composition is formed on the surface of steel by spraying or other coating method, the steel shows superior rust preventiveness.
