A device is described for monitoring the status of electrical machines having sliding contacts, such as brushes, sliprings etc. According to the invention, at least one test coil of a high-frequency transformer is connected into the leads of the electrical machines, which test coil induces a voltage in a secondary coil, the magnitude of which voltage is evaluated by a voltage measuring device (volt meter) in order to detect the status of the machine. In the case of a preferred exemplary embodiment, two primary coils are provided which are connected in such a manner that only asymmetric high-frequency changes in the flowing current but not changes in the operating current of the machine induce voltages.
