[Also in Division H2] The cable jointing method described in the parent Specification in which the molten inner surface of a plastic sleeving and the molten outer surface of a plastic cable insulation are agitated by a member between them is modified by replacing the member by a plunger 42, which agitates the molten plastic by passing through the molten sheath 3 to the molten surface layer of the insulation and moving annularly round the cable. The plunger is forced through the layer by spring 43 and then scrapes the surface of the insulation as the whole apparatus (Fig. 1, not shown) carrying the mould block 6 is rotated around the cable. After agitation a smaller plunger is fitted, which does not protrude out into the mould, and the mould block is pushed further over the sleeve to cause the molten plastic to take its final shape. The end face of the plunger is roughened (Fig. 7, not shown) and a passageway is provided in the plunger so that as it rotates molten plastic passes down the passageway to the exit 62 in the end of the plunger, both arrangements give better mixing of the plastic. To avoid having to replace the plunger by a smaller one the embodiment of (Fig. 4, not shown) may be used where a pin is provided to hold the plunger partially withdrawn.</p> |
