NEW MATERIAL:A naphthoic acid ester derivative of formula (one of X and Y is tert-butyl and the other is H; R is alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl). EXAMPLE:7-tert-butyl-3-hydroxy-2-naphtoic acid methyl ester. USE:Useful as a synthetic intermediate for tert-butyl-substituted naphthoic acid derivative which is useful as a mildewcidal agent or a synthetic intermediate for industrial chemicals. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by esterifying 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid in an inert solvent such as benzene in the presence of a dehydration catalyst such as p-toluenesulfonic acid and subjecting the esterified product to Friedel-Crafts reaction with a tert-butylation agent (e.g. isobutanol).
