Tannin or catechin-based tannin agents and/or isolated chlorogenic acid or their physiologically compatible derivatives, have the effect, when used before or during the absorption of foodstuffs, stimulants and/or medicines which activate the secretion of gastric acid and/or irritate or attack the gastric mucous membrane, of reducing the secretion of gastric acid and/or of protecting the gastric mucous membrane.
