Improvements relating to optical fibre transmission systems

An optical fibre transmission system comprises an optical fibre (1) into one end of which light signals are launched from a light-emitting-diode (2). Detector means (9) for detecting nuclear radiation transients is operable in response to the detection of such transients to cause the amplitude of optical signals produced by the diode (2) to be increased to compensate for the attenuation effects of the nuclear radiation transients. Alternatively the output of an additional light source eg a semiconductor laser could be additionally used when a transient is detected.
