To protect the helical garter spring of a lip sealing ring, in which the garter spring lies on the polymeric sealing lip, from corrosion and deposits from the sealing medium, the said garter spring is surrounded by a heat-shrunk sleeve, the shrinking temperature of which is between the temperature of the sealing medium at rest and that in operation. At the resting temperature, the action of the spring is blocked by the shrunk-on sleeve and it exerts virtually no radial force, while, at operating temperature, the sleeve is relaxed and the spring rests on the sealing lip with a radial force which compensates the decline in the radial force of the sealing lip at high temperatures. <IMAGE>
