A multi-cylinder internal combustion engine (1) converted to a motor-compressor set (1') has a first number of cylinders which work as driving cylinders and a second number of cylinders which work as compressor cylinders. Cylinder bores (4) of the compressor cylinders are connected to an inlet line (52) via a suction valve (36, 37) and to an outlet line (50) via a pressure valve (38). In order to retain as many series parts of the internal combustion engine as possible and to facilitate the conversion into a motor-compressor set (1), a cylinder head (6') covering both driving cylinders and compressor cylinders is provided in its regions adjacent to pistons (5) of the compressor cylinders with an insert part (20) which has at least two spaces (24, 25). The spaces (24, 25) are connected via the suction or pressure valve (36, 37, 38) to the cylinder bore (4) and via openings (27, 28) to the inlet or outlet line. <IMAGE>
