A compact, rapidly-deployable rappel rescue system (1) is housed in a lightweight carrier (3) and connected to a belt (6) or harness (2) for portable use or mounted in a stationary position readily available for emergency use. The carrier (3) contains a carabiner (7) connected to one end of a tubularly woven Kevlar aramid fiber or similar lightweight, high strength synthetic polymer rappel line (8) folder into a deployment bag, and edge guard protective sleeve pad (9) slideable on the line (8) and adjustable to the rappel point, a modified figure-­of-eight multi-configuration descender (10) and an end-­stop ring (11) connected to the other end of the rappel line (8).
