PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a directory retrieval method, directory retrieval device, program and storage medium enabling the further efficient retrieval of a designated directory. SOLUTION: This method comprises steps of designating a directory structure consisting of a plurality of layers and retrieving the designated directory structure from the storage medium storing data by an optional directory. Accordingly, by storing an image signal, for example, in a file in a directory structure having a determined name, the file storing the image signal can be efficiently searched even if numerous directories are formed in a large-capacity storage medium.
