PURPOSE:To increase the retrieving time for plural files and to improve the system reliability by recording the file information directly to a single block or plural blocks and also recording the retrieving items collectively by an amount equal to plural files. CONSTITUTION:The file structure of a postscript type recording device includes a volume label area 7, a file label area 8, an index label area 9, and plural file areas 10a, 10b.... Then the file information 13 on a single file is recorded directly in the area 8 over a single block or plural blocks 8a and 8b. Thus the erasion of the file information owing to the break of a power supply, etc., can be avoided. This improves the reliability of a system as a whole. Furthermore the information 13 is recorded in one or more blocks of the area 8 and therefore various types of retrieval and control are possible. At the same time, the retrieving items 14 of the information 13 of the area 8 are recorded collectively in a single block of the area 9 by an amount equal to plural files. Thus it is possible to shorten the reading time and to increase the retrieving speed of plural files.
