PURPOSE:To enable releasing at the optimum timing by correcting the timing of the completion of releasing a lock-up clutch in relation to the inertia phase of a transmission. CONSTITUTION:An automatic transmission 10 has a fluid torque converter 12 on an engine side and a gearing 14, and a lock-up clutch 28 is provided in parallel to the fluid torque converter 12 and transmits the power of a crankshaft directly to an input shaft when it is engaged. The number of revolutions No of the output shaft of the automatic transmission 10, a throttle opening theta, and the number of revolutions Ne of an engine are read. Then, by detecting the time from the issuance of a lock-up clutch releasing command to the end of an inertia phase, the time from the output of speed change to the issuance of the release command of the lock-up clutch 28 is corrected, based on the detected results.
