PURPOSE:To shorten measuring time and to control a profile error to the minimum by providing a notch with wider width than an object to be measured on a disk and taking it in and out to a measuring line optionally. CONSTITUTION:The titled instrument is composed of a moving device 10 and a detection part 20 and the detection part 20 is situated at a nonmeasuring line B at first and moved to the measuring line A by a traversing mechanism 12 at the time of measuring and further, lowered till the prescribed position by an elevating mechanism 11. When a hot billet 31 travels on a conveying roller 32, the detection part 20 is placed at the prescribed position via the notch 22c provided to the disk 22. Next, the disk 22 is oscillated 24 by 45 deg. toward the right and placed at the preparatory position of measurement. In this way, the disk 22 is oscillated 24 by 90 deg. toward the left by normal rotation of a motor 22c and the measurement is started. During this period, the measurement is performed by 90 times/1sec at intervals of 1 deg. and distance signals l1-l4 from four noncontact range finders 23a-23d, and respective signals from a pulse oscillator 25 and a reference point detector 26 are inputted to a CPU. The CPU obtains these inputs and calculates a profile of the object to be measured and displays it on a CRT.
