PURPOSE:To detect the nature/characteristic of a structural member based on the current measuring data along, by measuring sound generated when a member to be inspected is applied with an impact. CONSTITUTION:A sound generated when a member M to be inspected is applied with impact by a hummer H or the like is measured with a sound pressure meter 1 and a sound pressure data obtained as a time series function is converted into a functional frequency with a frequency analyzer 2. This data is inputted into a decision unit 3 which indicates the sound pressure value at which a specified proportion of number of spectrums among those existing with a specified frequency range exceed a certain value from the frequency function data being inputted. The ratio between all spectrums at the sound pressure value and those at the maximum sound pressure value is compared with a predetermined reference value and when the ratio is larger than the set value, the object is determined as normal but when it is smaller than the set value, it is determined as abnormal including defect such as cracking and the results are shown on a display unit 4.
