PURPOSE:To economically and advantageously recover the titled compound dissolved in various aqueous solutions, by bringing an aqueous solution containing the titled compound into contact with a synthetic adsorbent or carbonaceous material, adsorbing the titled compound thereon and eluting the compound with an organic solvent. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous solution containing a substituted quinolinol, preferably a 7-substituted-8-quinolinol having a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon group, e.g. 1,4,4,5-tetramethylheptyl group, etc., at the 7-position, is brought into contact with a synthetic adsorbent or carbonaceous material, preferably carbonaceous material, particularly granular carbonaceous material to adsorb the above-mentioned compound thereon. The adsorbed above-mentioned compound is then eluted by bringing into contact with an organic solvent capable of dissolving the above-mentioned compound, e.g. acetone, methanol, ethanol, xylene, toluene, benzene, chloroform, etc., and the expensive above-mentioned compound is effectively, industrially and advantageously separated and recovered from an aqueous solution, e.g. an acid, alkali, etc.
