NEW MATERIAL:A dipyridinium salt derivative expressed by the formula (m and n are >=6; x and z are >=3; Y is halide anion, aromatic or aliphatic sulfonate ion). EXAMPLE:N,N'-Bis(3,6,9-trioxatridecyl)-4,4'-dipyridinium diiodide. USE:Useful as a component in liquid crystal compositions, capable of assuming a stable thermotropic liquid crystal state and useful as, e.g. various display elements utilizing liquid crystals, various display elements utilizing elec trochemichromism and multipurpose ferroelectric liquid crystals. PREPARATION:A halide of a polyether is reacted with 4,4'-dipyridyl in an organic solvent at 60-140 deg.C to afford the aimed compound expressed by the formula.
