PURPOSE:To obtain the title pitch capable of providing a carbon fiber which is excellent in mechanical properties such as strength and modulus of elasticity, by heat- treating a particular raw material such as a high-boiling oil derived from petroleum, removing insoluble matter therefrom, heating the treated material to remove low- boiling fractions and further heat-treating the material at a high temp. CONSTITUTION:Cracked petroleum is obtd. by fluidized catalystic cracking of petroleum at 480-560 deg.C in the presence of a silica-alumina or zeolite cracking catalyst. At least one raw material selected from among a high-boiling oil contg. entrained catalyst powder obtd. from the cracked petroleum, a distillate or distillation residue of the cracked petroleum or pitch obtd. by heat treatment thereof is heat-treated in a hydrogen atmosphere at 350-550 deg.C for 10min -3hr. Insoluble matter is separated and removed from the reaction mixture to obtain a first treatment mixture. The first treatment mixture is heated at 250-400 deg.C in an inert gas atmosphere under a reduced pressure to remove a low-boiling fraction which distilled at the same temp., thereby obtaining a second treatment mixture. The second treatment mixture is treated in an inert gas atmosphere under a reduced pressure at 430-550 deg.C for 10-60min to obtain the title pitch having a softening point of 260-340 deg.C, a toluene insoluble content of 50-90% and a quinoline insoluble content of 10-40%.
