Azetidine derivs. of formula (I) and their salts are new (R is H or up to 12C, opt. substd. alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl, R1 is (CH2)nX. n is 1-4. X is halo, cyano, hydroxy, alkoxy, mercapto, alkylthio, heterocyclylithio, NR'R'', azido, thiocyanato or isothiocyanates. R' R'' are H or 1-4C alkyl, or together complete a heterocycle). (I) are cis and/or trans, racemic or optically active, and the oxime gp. has the syn configuration. Also new are intermediates of formulae (IV) and (II) (Ra is R1, opt. with functional gps. protected. A is H or sulpho. R6 is H or protecting gp. R'b is R or protecting gp. In (II), when A is H, Ra i not methylthiol, hydroxymethyl, azidomethyl, aminomethyl or alkoxymethyl).(I) are antibacterials effective against Gram-negative species, eps.coliforms, Klabsiella, Salomonella and Proteus. They can be used therapeutically (e.g. 0.25-4 g per day orally) or to disinfect surgical instruments
