PURPOSE:To shorten the occupied time of a disk device for each host computer by providing an identifier to check whether or not a prescribed file is used to a file control table set on the disk device. CONSTITUTION:A host computer 1 sets an identifier of a user file 2 to a file control table 2 set to a disk device 3A in response to the use start request against the file 2. Thus the file 2 is set under an available state and at the same time the device 3A is occupied only in a use start request mode. As a result, the use of the file 2 is impossible for a host computer 2 while the file 2 is updated by the computer 1. However other user files are available with the computer 2. Then the computer 1 resets the identifier of the file 2 when the replacement is through with the file 2. Thus the computer 1 occupies the device 3A during its reset action.
