PURPOSE:To improve safety during a downhill start in a reverse gear by preventing sudden start due to instantaneous release of a brake by bringing a brake pedal retention mechanism into inoperative condition when a detection means detects reversing motion even when the operating condition of the retention mechanism is being changed over. CONSTITUTION:A ratchet 4a of an engagement member 4 is made to engage with a ratchet 2g via a cable 8 by depressing a clutch pedal 1 and a brake pedal 2 respectively in directions of A and B and by making a changeover lever 11 in operative condition (a). With this constitution, the brake pedal 2 is instantaneously released when the brake pedal is brought to a depressed condition and a foot is removed, and the clutch pedal is returned by a specified travel while an accelerator pedal is being operated. In order to avoid this instantaneous release in a downhill start in a reverse gear, the changeover lever 11 is forcibly returned to an inoperative position (b) by actuating a solenoid 13 by turning both a reverse switch 15 corresponding to the reverse position of a transmission and an inclination switch on. And the sudden start can be prevented by operating the pedals ordinarily.
