PURPOSE:To make selection of tools at every process into automation, by storing specifications of tools available for each process of metalcutting operation into a tool specification memory part, determining the required tool from a machining form, while retrieving the tool in the specifications from the memory part and selecting an optimum tool. CONSTITUTION:This device comprises a tool specification memory part 4 storing specifications of plural tools to be used for metalcutting operation and a machining form input part 1 inputting a machining form to be cut. A process data orignating part 2 originates data on each process consisting of prepared hole cutting, roughing, bottom finishing and side finishing from data of the machining form input part 1. And, a tool specification decision part 3 determines specifications of the required tools for each process. A tool selecting part 5 retrieves a tool of the determined specifications from the tool specification memory part 4 and selects the optimum tool. In addition, a data editing part 6 edits specification data of the selected tool as control data for a metalcutting machine together with process data and form data.
