PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having an excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristic and running durability by coating a magnetic coating compd. prepd. by dispersing ferromagnetic powder, polishing material and resin component into an org. solvent on a nonmagnetic base and subjecting the coating to a treatment to attract the ferromagnetic powder to the base layer side by a magnet then subjecting the coating to a magnetic field orientation treatment. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic coating compd. prepd. by dispersing the ferromagnetic powder, polishing material and resin component in the org. solvent is coated on the nonmagnetic base 1. The coating layer 2 travels in an arrow direction while the surface of the base 1 and the magnet 3 maintain the contact. The ferromagnetic powder in the coating layer 2 is oriented in the direction of a magnetic flux and is attracted toward the base 1 side to settle near the base 1. The coating layer 2 is subjected to the orientation treatment by a regular orientation treatment device 4 and is dried by a dryer 5. The content of the polishing material such as SiO2, TiO or TiO2 in the magnetic coating compd. is preferably <=15pts.wt. per 100pts.wt. ferromagnetic powder.
