PURPOSE:To easily measure the consumed length of a melting electrode with good accuracy, by transmitting an ultrasonic wave to the upper part of the support of the melting electrode inserted in the crucible of a melting furnace from above and allowing the same to be projected to the aforementioned electrode through said support. CONSTITUTION:The ultrasonic wave from an ultrasonic wave sensor 13 is vertically transmitted to the lower part of a support 7 to be vertically projected to an electrode 5 through the support 7. Said ultrasonic wave is reflected from the upper and lower ends of the electrode 5 to be received by an ultrasonic sensor 13. The time interval required before the ultrasonic wave popagating through an object and relected therefrom is returned is proportional to the reciprocating propagation time in the object if the propagation speed of the ultrasonic wave is constant. Therefore, if the reflected wave of the ultrasonic wave transmitted from the ultrasonic wave sensor 1 is received and the received reflected wave is subsequently subjected to image processing to calculate the time interval required before the reflected wave is received, the length l1 from the upper end of the support 7 to the lower end thereof, the residual length l2 of the electrode 5 between the upper and lower ends thereof and the length l from the upper end of the support 7 to the lower end of the electrode 5 can be calculated.
