PURPOSE:To obtain carbon useful as abrasives and reinforcing materials, by granulating carbon having an optical energy band width within a specific range as a principal ingredient. CONSTITUTION:A reactive hydrocarbon gas, e.g. acetylene or ethylene, is introduced into a plasma discharge atmosphere and reacted while heating the atmosphere at 150-650 deg.C to produce the aimed granular carbon, consisting essentially of carbon having 2.6-4.5eV optical energy band width and having <=10mu average grain diameter. The resultant granular carbon contains 0.01-10mol% hydrogen and has a microcrystalline structure. |
