PURPOSE:To obtain the titled stable clay derivative having an adjustable pore diameter, by reacting a titanium salt or titania sol with an alkali silicate and reacting the resultant silica.titania sol with a swellable layer silicate. CONSTITUTION:One or more titanium sources of water- or acid-soluble titanium salts and titania sols are prereacted with an alkali silicate to give silica.titania sol, which is then reacted with a swellable layer silicate. Inexpensive and readily available titanium tetrachloride, titanium oxysulfate and titanium oxynitrate are cited as the water- or acid-soluble titanium salts to be used. The titania sols are obtained by hydrolyzing a titanium alkoxide expressed by the formula [R is 1-5C straight-chain or branched chain alkyl] and peptizing the resultant hydrolyzate or hydrolyzing titanium tetrachloride, titanium oxysulfate or titanium oxynitrate.
