PURPOSE:To prevent generation of cracks in a catalyst layer by coating a plate-like carbon fiber layer with a paste-like catalyst, and placing the plate comprising the carbon fiber layer and the catalyst layer between two press plates, then drying them. CONSTITUTION:A fine particle mixture 3a for a catalyst layer 3 is suspended in water or alcohol to form a paste-like suspension. The suspension is applied onto a plate-like carbon fiber layer 2 with a brush or by pouring the suspension on the carbon fiber layer 2 with the back side of the carbon fiber layer 2 sucked to form a plate 1 comprising the carbon fiber layer 2 and a catalyst layer 3. The plate 1 is placed between two press plates 5, 6 of a press 4. The press plate 5 is pressed against the press plate 6 through a presser plate 7 by a spring 8. With the plate 1 pressed, it is dried. Therefore, the expansion or shrinkage in drying is suppressed and generation of cracks in the catalyst layer can be prevented. |
