The invention relates to an optical speed indicator for a motor vehicle. The indicator comprises, carried by the vehicle: sensor means 2 for detecting the instantaneous movement speed of the vehicle and for sending out a first signal Vi which is representative of the said speed; comparator means 3-6 for comparing the said first signal Vi with at least one reference signal V1-V4 which is representative of a predetermined speed and for sending out a comparison signal C1-C4; and optical indicator means 8, 9 placed outside the vehicle, in an obvious way, at the front and/or at the rear, and activated selectively by the comparison signal. <IMAGE>
