PURPOSE:To produce a polymer having good moldability with a low content of fine particles with high productivity and suppressed formation of paraffin, by carrying out polymerization in the presence of a specific highly active catalyst at a reaction temperature below the melting point of the polymer. CONSTITUTION:An alpha-olefin is polymerized in the presence of hydrogen and a catalyst consisting of (A) a solid catalyst component obtained by reacting a reaction product prepared by reacting one or more selected from metallic Mg and hydroxylated organic compounds and oxygen-containing organic compounds of Mg with one or more oxygen-containing organic compounds of Ti, one or more organoaluminum compounds and/or one or more Si compounds with one or more halogenated aluminum compounds, (B) one or more selected from the group of organometallic compounds of group Ia, IIa, IIb, IIIb and IVb metals of the periodic table and (C) one or more selected from halogenated hydrocarbons, halogens, interhalogen compounds and halogen- containing compounds of tin, lead, phosphorus, Sb and S at a reaction temperature below the melting point of the polymer.
