It is the intention of the invention to design a wiper, the wiping pressure of which can be varied by means of a variable-drive mechanism for the wiping pressure during the journey and during the wiping process, in such a manner that the wiping pressure is lower in the course of the swivelling angle which the wiper blade covers from top to bottom than in the course of the swivelling angle which the wiper blade covers from bottom to top. This measure is intended to eliminate the difficulties in the driving mechanism of the wiper and the obstructions to visibility which impair road safety, which currently occur when driving quickly in heavy rain and which are caused by the build-up of the layer of water which flows upwards over the windscreen and is several millimetres thick.
