PURPOSE:To successively display beautiful pictures of multiple colors on a display device by processing picture data on a cassette tape by compressing and recording the data of a still picture completely coated by eight basic colors and a pseudo-intermediate color efficiently. CONSTITUTION:The still picture completely coated by the eight basic colors and the pseudo-intermediate color is divided into units of 8dotsX1dot or 8dotsX2dots, noticed and divided into four types of the patterns of the pattern 12 in which all the 8 dots are '1', the pattern 13 in which all the 8dots are '0', the pattern 14 in which '1' and '0' are mixed and equal in the 16dots and the pattern 15 in which the data is random. The cassette tape recording the still picture data compressed according to a data compression format is set to a cassette driving mechanism 10, read through a tape reading I/F8 and stored in a RAM5. By referring to the compression format, the compression is released in the sequence of G, R, B and the developed data is written in a VRAM7 through a VDP6. Thereby, the still picture data can be displayed on the display device.
