PURPOSE:To obtain optical fiber formed integrally with high molecular cholesteric liquid crystal by forming film of a high molecular cholesteric liquid crystal having an asymmetric carbon in the side chain on the end surface of the optical fiber, being oriented in the perpendicular direction to the end face of the optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:Suitable thermoplastic resin contains at least one asymmetric carbon in the polymeric side chain and the principal chain comprises polyacrylic acid residue, polymethacrylic acid residue, and polysiloxane residue, etc. The thermoplastic resin is in the cholesteric liquid crystal state at high temp. When said thermoplastic resin is quenched to room temp., the pitch of the spiral in the liquid crystal state is frozen, causing selective transmission and selective scattering of circularly polarized light at a specified wavelength. This wavelength, namely, the maximum wavelength for selective scattering is selected to coincide with the wavelength within a range of the low transmission loss (0.8-1.6mum) of the optical fiber by selecting suitably a unit having capability for forming liquid crystal and a unit having asymmetric carbon. By this method, the optical fiber can be integrated with a high molecular cholesteric liquid crystal. |
