PURPOSE:In the production of phenol and acetone by oxygen oxidation of cumene, the distillation residue is pyrolyzed in the presence of a metal sulfate-gamma- alumina catalyst to effect recovery of cumene, phenol and other substances in high yield. CONSTITUTION:Cumene is oxidized with oxygen into cumene hydroperoxide, the peroxide is subjected to acidic decomposition and phenol and acetone is separated by distillation of the reaction mixture. Then, the distillation residue is pyrolyzed at 200-310 deg.C, preferably 250-300 deg.C in the presence of a mixed catalyst containing a metal sulfate, preferably aluminum or magnesium sulfate and gamma-alumina (preferably at a weight ratio of 20/80-80/20) to recover useful substances such as phenol, cumene, alpha-methylstyrene, acetophenone or the like. The process costs are saved and the polymerization of acetophenone can also be inhibited. |
