PURPOSE:To designate a size of an output dot in accordance with a kind of an image to be brought to a printing output, and to change easily a dot density, by changing the light quantity of a light emission of a laser in accordance with a request from an external device through a communication means. CONSTITUTION:When a power source of a laser beam printer 100 is turned on, in case an output dot density notice request command has been received already from an external computer 200 which has been connected through interfaces 30, 32, an output dot density which has been set at present in the printer 100 is informed to the computer 200. When an output dot density setting command is received from the computer 200, a PCPU 66 sets a value corresponding to the received value, to a circuit 61 for controlling a motor 53 of a polygon mirror 52, and also, when a laser light emission light quantity changing command is received from the computer 200, a light beam is emitted by the corresponding light quantity by controlling a laser driving circuit 60.
