PURPOSE:To make a comb blade type lathe compact, by forming an evading space in a tail stock on the comb blade type lathe to shunt a flat tool bed so that the travel distance for the shunt of the flat tool bed is shortened, thereby the working efficiency is enhanced. CONSTITUTION:A comb blade type lathe 1 is composed of a bed 2, a spindle bed 4, a flat tool bed 4, a tool 5, a tail stock 6 and an evading space 7. A workpiece (W) supported by the spindle bed 3 and the tail stock 6 is cut by one of tools 5 set on the tool bed 4. If the workpiece (W) is cut by another tool 5 set on the tool bed 4, the tool 5 and the tool bed 4 are moved toward the tail stock 6, and the tool 5 and the tool bed 4 having reached an evading position are moved orthogonal to the spindle. Then the tool 5 and the tool bed 4 are returned toward the workpiece (W). In this arrangement, the evading space 7 formed in the tail stock 6 allows to move the tool 5 and the tool bed 4 without hindrance and with no interference with the tail stock 6.
