PURPOSE:To record a picture with stable density by providing a conversion table forming section forming a conversion table converting a picture signal into a test pattern signal and sending the result to a signal conversion section. CONSTITUTION:A desired picture signal versus picture density characteristic, that is, the relation of a density D on a photoelectric material 16 with respect to a picture signal A is stored in a conversion table forming section 33, which generates a conversion table T based on the characteristic and the relation between a test pattern signal Bt and the test pattern density D. That is, the conversion table forming section 33 obtains a picture signal A obtained from the picture density D corresponding to each test pattern signal Bt based on the picture signal versus picture density characteristic and obtains the relation between the picture signal A and the test pattern signal Bt. Thus, a picture without density fluctuation is obtained.
