It has been known and customary for a long time to produce souvenirs with the illustration of texts, poems, proverbs, etc. from slices sawn from the cross-section of branches of trees. In this case, the cross-section of the wood has a bearing function as the base for the characters applied. The annual rings which are usually visible have a decorative character as a type of natural attraction. In the case of the objects mentioned above, these are cross-sections of branches of trees which bear no relation to the age of the tree. Cross-sections of tree trunks to illustrate the age or different growth phases of a tree are occasionally found in museums or in illustrations with biological explanations. In this case, the object and intention of the illustration and the explanation are the growth or external influences on the growth of the tree described.
