PURPOSE:To upgrade the operability of a user in terms of a picture-in-picture type television receiver by identification-displaying picture contents not only in a main screen area but in a sub screen area when the picture contents displayed in the main screen area are modified. CONSTITUTION:When an up or down key suitable for the number of a main receiving channel in a remote controller 24 and that of a main external video signal input terminal is pressed to modify the picture contents displayed in the main screen area, respective picture identification displays are executed in the main and sub screen areas. If picture identification display data in the main screen area is set, for instance, it is supplied to a main character display circuit 19M, and a main picture identification display signal is generated. Then blanking is released, and the main picture whose contents are modified is displayed in the main screen area, and simultaneously the sub picture with original picture contents is displayed in the sub screen area. At that time respective picture identification displays are carried out in the main and sub screen areas.
