The assembly, comprising four hinge plates (10, 20, 30, 40) each swingably connected to two adjacent plates is spring-loaded, e.g. by helical springs (12 to 42), so that in a first configuration hinge plates (30, 40) are swung towards hinge plates (10, 20), preferably to face them, whereas in a second configuration (as shown) hinge plates (10, 40) are swung towards hinge plates (20, 30), preferably to an extremity of travel at right angles thereto. The assembly is movable between first and second configurations only an application of force to counter the prevailing spring bias and is especially useful for drop leaf furniture where in respective configurations it either provides support for an extended leaf (39) or holds the leaf (39) in a collapsed or folded condition. <IMAGE>
