PURPOSE:To make it possible to thin, lighten, and rotate a chuck opening and closing the jaw engaged with the plunger in a body at a high speed by constituting the chuck in such a way that the plunger guide face space of the jaw is increased little by little toward the front section of the jaw. CONSTITUTION:When a plunger 3A is moved to the left, a master jaw 6A is moved in a radial direction of a body 1A due to the wedge action of a T shaped wedge groove 4A and the T shaped wedge section 7A of the master jaw causing a top jaw 26 to hold the outer periphery of a workpiece. When the plunger 3A is moved in the opposite direction, the workpiece has its inner periphery held. The tapering of the guide faces 17, 22, and 28 of the reinforcing section 15 on the working section 13 of the T shaped wedge section 7A reduces the weight. Since when the plunger 3A is moved to a maximum of the right side, a projecting section 34 passes through the notch section of the master jaw 6A and takes a position opposing to the guide face 28, even if projection length is short, the holding stroke of the master jaw 6A can also be shorten so that the body may be thinned.
