PURPOSE:An antistatic agent containing a specific CMC quaternary ammonium salt sparingly soluble or insoluble in water, having improved water resistance and durability and useful as a material for synthetic fibers, etc. CONSTITUTION:An antistatic agent, containing a CMC quaternary ammonium salt, expressed by formula I {R is H or quaternary ammonium salt of carboxymethyl; n is 10-1,000, provided that the substitution degree of the carboxymethyl based on the anhydroglucose units is 1.5-3.0, the quaternary ammonium salt of the carboxymethyl group is expressed by formula II [R<1>-R<4> are 1-20C aliphatic hydrocarbon, three of R<1>-R<4> are the above-mentioned hydrocarbon and one is aralkyl or trialkylammoniumalkyl or two of R<1>-R<4> are the above-mentioned hydrocarbon and the residual two are aralkyl, dialkylphenoxy(or alkylphenoxy)alkyleneoxyalkyl or one or two of R<1>-R<4> are the above-mentioned hydrocarbon and the rest together with N form a ring]} and particularly sparingly soluble or insoluble in water.
