PURPOSE:To improve the surface quality of an ingot in continuous casting of a steel contg. Sb at the ratio controlled to specific weight % or below by adding Ti thereto and adjusting the relation of the concns. between Ti and N to specific conditions. CONSTITUTION:Ti is added to the steel contg. <=0.30wt% C, <=0.1wt% Sb, etc. and the respective concns. [Ti], [N] of Ti and N are so adjusted as to satisfy formulas I, II, III in continuous casting of the above-mentioned steel. An ingot leveling temp. is further set at a >=910 deg.C range in conjunction with the addition of Ti. The region of the amt. to reduce in area of tensile rupture at a high temp. where the generation of a crack in the continuous casting stage is obviated is determined when the concns. of Ti and N are adequately set. The cracking of the ingot is prevented by such determination coupled with setting of the ingot leveling temp. at >=910 deg.C. The surface quality of the ingot is thus improved.
