PURPOSE:Fibers made of carbon pitch are combined, wound up around an air- permeable bobbin, preoxidized in this state, then carbonized and graphitized to give the titled fiber of high quality. CONSTITUTION:A carbon pitch, preferably an optically anisotropic carbon pitch is melt-extruded into filaments, wound up around a bobbin. Usually, 2-20 resul tant yarns, preferably counting to 500-5,000 filaments, are combined and wound up around an air-permeable bobbin, preferably of 10-80% void volume in an appropriate thickness. Then, the filaments wound around a bobbin are preoxidized as they are, in an oxidative atmosphere, preferably at 200-300 deg.C, then, when needed, the filaments are unwound from the bobbin, carbonized in an inert atmosphere usually at 1,000-2,000 deg.C, further when needed, graphitized usually at 2,000-3,000 deg.C to give the objective fibers.
