PURPOSE:To obtain a hologen battery in which current per area of cathode is increased, charging time is shortened, and output current is increased by using a gas diffusion electrode in a cathode. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous solution 2 comprising ZnCl2, KCl, and NaCl is accommodated in an electrolyte bath 1. An electrode 3 made of carbon serving as a negative electrode and a gas diffusion electrode 4 serving as a positive electrode are arranged in the aqueous solution 2. The gas diffusion electrode 4 is formed by bonding a gas diffusion layer 8 comprising a mixture of carbon black and polytetrafluoroethylene to a reaction layer 7 comprising a platinum group metal or its oxide, carbon black, and polytetrafluoroethylene. During charge, a large volume of Cl2 gas is generated in active catalytic reaction on the reaction layer 7. As a result, the charging amount per time is increased ten or more times compared with the conventional battery. During discharge, Cl2 gas is converted into 2Cl<-> in the reaction layer 7 and dissolved in the aqueous solution 2. Therefore, discharge capacity is increased. |
