PURPOSE:To correct the deterioration of resolution in a subscanning direction which is caused by the optical response characteristics of an image sensor by detecting the time interval of an effective line synchronizing signal outputted from a reading part in an optical reader and a reading density level difference between an objective picture element on a multivalue- quantized image in the subscanning direction and the preceding picture element of the objective one to find out a correcting value for the objective picture element based on arithmetic processing. CONSTITUTION:The titled device is provided with a subtractor 13 for sensing the reading density level of the preceding picture element A from an objective picture element B and detecting the reading density level difference, a ROM 14 for selecting a correcting factor C to be used for the operation of the correction value D of the objective picture element B based on respective data for a reading time and the density level difference obtained from the subtractor 13, a multiplier 15 for calculating the correcting value D based on a correcting factor C and the density level difference obtained from the subtractor 13, and an adder 16 for adding the correcting value D obtained from the multiplier 15 to the reading density level of the objective picture element B and outputting a correcting value. Consequently, resolution correction considering the influence of the photoelectric conversion optical response characteristics of the image sensor can be attained.
